Celebrity's Favorite Bed and Breakfasts Exposed

By: Jane Leisteiner

Okay, so you may never get to meet Meryl Streep, Ron Howard, Cybill Shepherd, Larry Csonka, Danny Glover, Meg Ryan, or Captain Kirk (a.k.a. William Shatner) in person. But you can stay at the very same bed and breakfast inns that they stayed at, and have just as good a time as they did!

With several Oscars and a long list of successful movies, Meryl Streep is obviously good at making wise choices. So why not follow her lead and book a stay at the Inn at Long Lake in Naples, Maine. The charming, historic Victorian is a favorite of the actress and her daughters, and it is little wonder why. Each of 16 guest rooms is individually decorated in period style with antiques and Victorian-style floral wallpapers. A collection of antique clocks and stained-glass windows add to the bed and breakfast's ambiance. Enjoy views of the namesake lake, as well as close access to local restaurants and shops. Portland, Freeport and Boothbay Harbor are just a short drive away.

Just outside of downtown Baltimore, you'll find Grammercy Mansion, a historic Tudor-style gem with 11 lavish guest rooms and suites. Director and Oscar-winner Ron Howard is among the notable guests to have spent the night at this bed and breakfast. The individually decorated rooms range from the sunny Blue Garden room which evokes the feeling of 18th-century France with its antique Louis XIV furnishings and marble fireplace to the extravagant Tudor Room that reminds one of an opulent suite at an English castle. Whatever the choice, guests will feel as pampered as a celebrity with gourmet breakfasts and posh surroundings.

After a busy day exploring Washington, D.C., there is no better place to relax and unwind than at the Swann House B&B. Located in Dupont Circle, the historic inn has 12 guest rooms, each individually decorated. Some feature fireplaces or whirlpool tubs. Cybil Shepherd was once a guest, and you'll bask in the same star treatment she enjoyed as you sleep on a feather mattress with sateen sheets and down pillows or sip champagne as you feast on a gourmet breakfast. Shops and restuarants are just steps away , and you are just minutes from all of the Capitol's many attractions.

For the guys, why not follow in the footsteps of NFL great Larry Csonka and visit the Bent Creek Lodge in Asheville North Carolina? This bed & breakfast is a secluded mountainside retreat with easy access to fishing, biking, horseback riding, and canoeing; all the kinds of activities that a 'real man' thrives on. As well, the Bent Creek Lodge's second floor rooms open out onto a wide veranda, with great mountain views. Add rustic furniture and a true 'down-home' feeling, and you can see why this NFL Hall of Famer and avid outdoorsman stays at the Bent Creek Lodge. Perhaps the guys can stay here, while the girls live it up at Swann House!

'Lethal Weapons' are the last things you'll find at the Apple Country Bed & Breakfast, which may explain why Danny Glover stayed here. Located in Wenatchee, Washington, this 1918-vintage home is country charm personified. Besides Apple Country's homey 15 rooms, "Breakfast will be one of the highlights of your stay," says this B&B's website. "Jerry's 'soon-to-be-world-famous' sticky-buns are worth getting up for." Sounds like an oasis of calm to us. No wonder Mel Gibson is nowhere to be found!

Meg Ryan and William Shatner are among the famous celebrities that have graced the rooms at the Aaron Burr House Inn & Conference Center in New Hope, Pennsylvania. The 1873 inn rests atop the site of a Revolutionary War-era home where Aaron Burr actually hid out after his notorious duel with Alexander Hamilton. Victorian charm abounds in the guest rooms, some of which include antique canopy beds. The guest room walls have been stenciled and hand painted by a local artist.
