Hotels and Bed and Breakfast in Stornoway in the Western Isles

By: Francis MacDonald

For thousands of years a great many of the islands found in the Western Isles of Scotland have been populated but during the last couple of centuries the population has declined drastically leaving only a few of the 200+ islands populated. Found off the west of Scotland in the Atlantic ocean, on the Isle of Lewis can be found the only town in the Western Isles, Stornoway.

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis in the Western Isles of Scotland was one of the busiest herring fishing ports in Europe. During the herring season the town's population trebled with thousands of fishermen and ancillary workers traveling to Stornoway to work. Sadly the trade collapsed following the First World War but Stornoway still has a small fishing fleet which adds character to the town. Stornoway is one of the best places in which to stay when visiting the Western Isles and below you will find a little information about the bed and breakfast accommodation available.

The Caberfeidh Hotel has a long held reputation for being Stornoway's finest hotel. The hotel is situated on the outskirts of town opposite the Lews Castle grounds on the road that heads over to the Isle of Harris.

The Royal Hotel is the town's most historic hotel having first opened in 1850. Looking lovely from the outside the hotel has some period features in its luxurious rooms. The hotels HS1 cafe bar and Boatshed restaurant offer superb cuisine and prove very popular with locals and visitors alike.

The Caladh Inn is Stornoway's biggest hotel with the largest selection of rooms. The Caladh Inn is situated just outside the center of the town (on the opposite side to the Caberfeidh hotel) at the start of the road heading towards Stornoway airport. Being the closest hotel to the airport, plus the fact that it is so close to the town center, the Caladh Inn is very popular with both those visiting for business and pleasure.

The 4 star Holm View Guest House can be found roughly fifteen minutes drive from the town center of Stornoway. A quick read of the many positive reviews will show you that the reputation of Holm View is superb with mention made of the luxurious accommodation and friendly hospitality. Bed and breakfast is also available in their Holm View Cottage.

The 3 star Thorlee Guest House is found right in the very center of Stornoway and offers the cheapest accommodation in the town. Offering such reasonable prices it is not surprising that the Thorlee is one of the most popular places in Stornoway.

All of the accommodation in this article can be booked online. This fact is very important as, at certain times of the year, it is extremely common to find many guest houses in the Western Isles fully booked with "No Vacancies" signs displayed. It is always the wisest decision to book your accommodation as early as possible long before your trip. Wherever you decide to stay in Stornoway you can be sure that the hospitality will be flawless as this part of the world is widely known for offering some of the finest hospitality in the country.
