How To Get A Us Passport In Person

By: Aazdak Alissimmo

It's vacation time! There are a lot of things to think about when traveling - where you want to go to and when you want to go, and how much time you'd like to spend there - but you also need to think about those little annoying things like the rules of travel, and even, getting your passport.

If you are planning to travel outside of the United States, you will need a US passport as your main form of identification while traveling. There are no exceptions to this rule except for Mexico and Canada - and those are only in specific circumstances.

The two big exceptions to the passport rule are Canada and Mexico. Even these two have made a couple of changes to their rules - you must have a passport if entering Mexico or Canada by air, but not by land or sea. You will still need copies of your driver's license and your birth certificate.

For people who have not yet had a US passport, there is a strict requirement that your passport is applied for in person. Probably the best way to do this is to look up which of your local US Post Offices accepts passport applications. Or, you can ask your post office in person.

You may not have a post office close to you. If you have a public library, a town office, a state office, a town clerk or other municipal office nearby, they may also accept your passport application. There are over 9,000 application acceptance spots for passports according to the US government's website.

You will need to bring your completed application for a US passport with you to the location, as well as two identical passport photos, that are 2"x2" in size (can be taken at most photo stores). You will also need proof of citizenship, usually in the form of a birth certificate.

Be prepared to also prove who you are. Proving your identity usually entails showing your driver's license or other identification card that has been issued by a state agency. Minors many not have cards like this, so they will need to be present at the application, and you will need to vouch for their id.

Your next step is paying for the passport, which will cost you about $100 in fees. It will cost a little less for minors. You will also need to be prepared to wait for your passport to arrive - a process which can take up to eight weeks. Check the travel.gov website for updated wait times.

Give yourself plenty of time before you need your passport - a good rule is allow an extra month of time over what the predicted processing time is. That way, you won't be stressed over getting your passport in time, and you can make sure that you travel in relaxation and have a great trip.
