By: Jez Rourke

Ever wished you were sitting in another spot on your flight? Well then you might want to consider ways to being upgraded on your Flight. A popular and common way of being considered for an upgrade is to become a frequent flyer for an airline or travel with someone who is. Some members find that they are upgraded due to a need on the plane and the fact that they are a frequent flyer member.

Often a flight upgrade is the result of an overbooked plane. If your very empty flight has to be balanced out, the airline will upgrade some of the passengers to equal it back out. The best place to sit for this type of upgrade is in the middle.

You can also find yourself being upgraded on a flight when it has been over booked. This happens frequently so to get this upgrade you need to volunteer to give up your seat, generally the next one will be a better seat as a thank you.

Another way to being upgraded on flights is your attitude, be polite and courteous to the gate agent, and more importantly the attendants. Your attitude will be the second thing they notice besides your clothing and having the right one will get you upgraded faster. Remember that each personnel on the flight does and will discuss passengers when choosing to upgrade, so make a good impression on all of them. Always dress smartly and be presented well, a casual business style is a good look to go with. A well-dressed passenger will get chosen over a one wearing nothing but sweats and tennis shoes.

When booking your flight ask the agent after they have began typing your information into the computer, if there are any upgrades. Be polite while finding out without committing yourself or the agents if one is available. If you find that there isn't one then simply say "Thank you" however if there is and it costs consider it, you may save money in the long run. Second if one becomes available the agent will remember that polite customer and possibly recommend you.

Having a box of chocolate is another way to get an upgrade. While speaking to the lead attendant, ask if there is an upgrade and then mention that you are celebrating or have some extra chocolate and want to share. If there is not one then say "Thank you" and give them the chocolate, you may find yourself with an upgrade that wasn't available when you asked.

Showing up for your flight later rather than earlier can also give you a chance to get that upgrade. It is toward the end of the loading of passengers when the agents and attendants will know what seats are left open and what is not.

A good impression goes a long way and being upgraded on your flight is no different.
