The British Virgin Islands: Sailor's Paradise

By: Barry Monteiro

With deep channels and harbors between inviting green islands and sandy cays, the British Virgin Islands are among the finest sailing areas in the world. This makes it an ideal vacation spot for anyone who loves the ocean, and especially anyone who loves boats and boating.

The first ingredient of paradise: geography. The weather here is perfect, with gentle trade winds blowing at between 10 and 25 knots and a little more in the winter. Those filled sails will take your ship to protected bays and inlets, where you can anchor and explore onshore, or dive into the warm swimmable waters that remain within five degrees of 80 all year. The islands are densely packed, keeping the water here calm and easy to sail. The short distances and varied islands make learning to sail here simple and fascinating.

Your explorations will take you to perfect white sand beaches lit with a tropical sun and surrounded by perfect coral reefs. Offshore, you can snorkel or surf; every imaginable water sport can be practiced here. Or you can charter your own yacht from one of the dozens of charter companies located here. Despite its small size, the BVI is the home port of the largest charter yacht fleet in the world.

It's a good thing you can rent a yacht, too; most of the fifty islands that make up the BVI are inaccessible except by water. Both Windward and Leeward islands offer a remarkable variety of ecosystems for you to explore, from the mountainous terrain of Treasure Island to the flat sands of Dead Chest Cay, from sea caves to thick jungle.

In fact, the BVI vacation experience won't feel like a vacation at all. You won't see the typical tourist casinos or tall hotels; instead, you'll find friendly people, light or nonexistent traffic, beautiful isolated villas, and more peace and tranquility than you have ever known in your life. Tropical rainforests butt up against swimming pools and sophisticated restaurants, or you can spend time sailing between island exploring the deep coral canyons below the waters.

The BVI government has done a great deal to preserve its beauty. They've earned worldwide applause with innovations like the National Parks Trust, a government agency that protects and maintains the underwater ecosystems and the natural jungle of the islands. Because they've done such an outstanding job, you can't find better snorkeling anywhere in the world; underwater parks are dotted throughout the Islands. Think about it: you charter a boat, sail from island to island, and stop your leisurely journey only long enough to explore the underwater canyons and little shore restaurants that are found all over the island. Can you imagine a better vacation than a chartered yacht in the British Virgin Islands?
