Traveling How to Avoid A Money-Sucking Nightmare

By: Molten

Whether you are traveling for pleasure or for business, domestically or internationally, there are certainly a number of ways that you can maximize your dollar and have a memorable and enjoyable trip. No matter if your trip requires entertainment for the whole family or just you, and whether or not you need flights, rental cars, and hotels, there are some simple ways to make sure that you get the most for your money.

To begin, if your travel includes the need for flights, then a bit of research is in order. There are numerous travel sites on the Internet that claim to help you secure the lowest possible fares, especially if you also book a hotel and/or a rental car in the package. However, there are other options available. As it turns out, maybe the gnome doesn't always know best, because while cheap flights can be found on these sites, often times better deals can be found through the airline sites' themselves! With a bit of time and research, you can be certain to find the best deals available. And the farther in advance you start looking, the more likely you are to stumble onto a gem of a deal.

Now it is time to look into how you will get around once you arrive. The most obvious and popular choice is to rent a car. However, this is not cheap. Do some serious thinking about where and when you are traveling. If you are going somewhere for a quick weekend, and you plan to stay fairly close to the airport, is there public transportation readily available? If so, you may want to nix the rental car, especially since weekend rates are often far higher than weekday rentals. If you absolutely must be able to drive yourself around, do your homework before grabbing what seems like a bargain. If the rental car company is having a special on their full-size vehicles, price the gasoline in the area; you may spend more than you would have on a regular-priced economy car when all is said and done.

After you have flown in and picked up your car, where are you heading? Chances are that you need a hotel room. There are tons of options in most places, just as there are tons of ways to snag a deal on the normal rates. You can either book this portion of your travel altogether with the other pieces, meaning you probably will get a discounted rate, or you could search the hoteliers on your own in the hopes that there are some specials just waiting for takers. By dealing with the hotel directly, you are also in a position to ask for upgrades in room type.

Let's surmise that you have now arrived at your destination, picked up that car, and checked into your hotel. You feel smug, knowing that you saved a load of money on all of these portions of your trip. So now what? Amid all of the travel planning to get there, did you take the time to determine what there is to do and how you can do it? Entertainment budgets are notorious for being too small; there is always some unexpected expense involved with traveling. Whether the food is more than you thought or there is nothing to do in the area, you would be wise to have planned this out, too. Researching the activities that are available in the area and looking for discounts and coupons ahead of time mean you can maximize your vacation time and your vacation dollar.

In the end, it does not matter whether you have taken the whole brood on a forced- family-fun vacation, or if you are hopping into town for a quick business meeting. No matter the reason for the travel, nothing feels better than knowing you saved a lot of money on your travel. With some research and a willingness to invest a bit of time, you can ultimately know that you have saved money.
