With the end of the La Liga season fast approaching, the battle to stay in the top flight has never been so tight. With all the teams in the bottom half of the table not sure of their future in the league, there is a real dogfight taking place.

For the bottom eleven teams in the La Liga only six points separate tenth place from the relegation zone. Unfortunately for Espanyol it looks like their fate has been sealed par a miracle. The great escape however looks to be just a dream. For the other teams scrapping it out one win would be enough to bump a team up at least a few places, edging ever closer to safety. For the teams fighting relegation it seems to be nip and tuck with their remaining fixtures. The teams who will survive will be the teams who can string a few results together.

For Sporting Gijon, remaining in the La Liga in their first season would ultimately be described as a success. But for other teams who over the years have been a permanent fixture in the top flight are now fighting for their lives. Bottom team Espanyol who have seen 73 seasons in La Liga are one of the oldest teams in Spain and for them to be relegated would be a fans nightmare. Other such teams as Real Betis and Athletico Bilbao are also well-established clubs, famous worldwide. For any of these teams to go down would be a shock to the Spanish footballing nation.

Financially, relegation to the Second Division A would be a big blow to any club. With the loss of league bonuses, television rights and surely a drop in attendances, the clubs will struggle to adjust to life in the Second Division. Teams would have to sell their best players to secure their financial well-being. History dictates that out of the three teams that go down, it will be the teams who can hold on to the most players who will have the best chance of bouncing back up.

As the end approaches the fight to stay in the La Liga is hotter than ever. Keep a close eye on the league if betting, as there will inevitably be some fireworks.
