With its position overlooking Lake Ontario and its relative proximity to Niagra Falls, Canada's most populous city, Toronto, is a popular tourist destination for tourists from the UK and Ireland all year round. Yet, when it comes to New Year's city destinations the city really puts on its party hat. So with the increasing number of cheap flights to Canada - here are a number of reasons to consider a New Year's break in the big T.

Nathan Phillips Square located downtown on Queen Street and Bay Street is no doubt one of the primary party areas of the city on December 31st, with an open air concert each year that is broadcast live across the country. It is also worth visiting the landmark when festivities are not in full swing, where you can ice skate on the reflecting pool and take a stroll around the Peace Garden.

For a celebration that's a little more laid back why not take a cruise out onto Lake Ontario and around the Harbour. There are many services offering simple boat rides out to the Toronto Islands and the Scarborough Bluffs, or alternatively opt for a slap-up meal just offshore and take in the fireworks and some dancing on the water.

For a more family-orientated Toronto New Year, the city's amusement complex and Marina - Ontario Place - is often a popular destination and includes a Marina and concert theatre. The Atlantis Pavilions at the site boasts one of the most glamorous parties which includes champagne, hor d'ouvres and numerous DJs in a complex that overlooks the lake and city skyline.

Atlantis Pavilions is one of the most sought after tickets in the city, but one of the leading places to spend the evening is likely to be the tallest building in the Toronto, the CN Tower. It pays to book early at the city's most identifiable attractions, but the evening is likely to be one of the most memorable with a fantastic meal in the 360 Restaurant and a look-out over the city from the glass floor and Sky Pod Observation Levels. The building is also known for its special illuminations in honour of the countdown.
