With its impressive coastline and the rolling hills of Dartmoor at its heart, Devon is a popular destination for tourists from inside and outside of the UK the year round - particularly during the warmer months. Yet, for those eager to take a Christmas break, the county certainly knows how to celebrate the festive season - and whether you are eager to sip mulled wine around the fire in one of many Devon cottages available to rent, or you want to overlook the sea from your hotel window on Christmas morning - the region has so much to offer.
Tavistock
Famed at Christmas for its Dickensian Evening (on the 4th December) when the town turns out for Dickens themed late night shopping, Tavistock on the western edge of Dartmoor has a communal and laid back feel during the season. The town has been a market centre for the area since the 12th Century and still operates a pannier market in its centre on Fridays. The town is also in a fantastic location for exploring Dartmoor and particularly the megalithic monuments at Merrivale. There are also good connections to Christmas shopping in Plymouth.
Exeter
At the opposite edge of Dartmoor lies the county town of Exeter. For many in the region, the city is the prime destination for Christmas shopping (though this is an honour often attributed to Plymouth). With carols in the cathedral and its historic narrow streets, the city offers a very traditional festive spirit emphasized by its fantastic lights. The centre can get very busy at times - and there are special events throughout the season.
Torbay
Torbay on the South coast incorporates the three major towns of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. The area boasts a Christmas Carnival each year but is perhaps best known for the pantomimes at Princess Theatre in Torquay. For something a little different why not visit Santa at the uniquely festive surroundings of Kent's Cavern - an internationally renowned prehistoric cave. The Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway also operate their Santa Express during December.
North Devon
The north of the county is perhaps home to the most laid back Christmas vibe in the area - and a fantastic place to escape for couples looking for quiet coastal walks and awesome scenery. Farmers markets occur in Barnstaple town centre, as well as at rural amusement park The Big Sheep. The towns of Dunster and Clovelly are both famed for their illuminations - while Bideford is considered one of the top five destinations in the country for New Years Eve festivities.
