Spanish Canary Island Gran Canaria is the central island of the Canaries and home to many beautiful golden sand beaches. Resorts on the island are full of character and backed by Spanish villages, lending an authentic Spanish flair. As the capital island of the Canary Islands, Gran Canaria is often referred to as a 'Miniature Continent.'

Resorts on Gran Canaria

Each resort on Gran Canaria offers a unique experience for tourists from all over the world. Most resorts offer indoor and outdoor pools and spas and a variety of outdoor sports. Golf, shopping and water sports are among some of the more popular activities for tourists to enjoy. The natural, volcanic landscape of the island allows for amazing views from many hotels, resorts, night clubs and restaurants. The smaller resorts often have less crowded beaches. Those further away from the airport are generally more private.

Relatively small, Puerto Rico resort is built around two hills overlooking spectacular ocean views. Long stairways have been built to make travel to and from the beaches easier on travelers of all ages and abilities. Public transportation is available to take you anywhere you like, but walking is generally the preferred method of transportation around the resort. If you prefer public transportation, shirts are required by most taxi drivers due to issues of hygiene. Shopping, boating, water sports and being a beach bum are some of the most popular activities.

The largest resort on Gran Canaria is Playa del Ingles, located on the southern side of the island. In fact, it is the second largest resort of its kind in Europe. Possibly better known for its nightlife, Playa del Ingles attracts a younger crowd during the summer months especially. Most of the resort is built on a level walking area for ease of travel on foot. The most popular areas are around the night clubs, golf courses and restaurants. Families often enjoy restaurants and shopping centres with children's and teen's clubs.

Things to Do In Gran Canaria

Salobre is a golfer's paradise! The most popular golf resort on Gran Canaria, Salobre overlooks two fabulous 18-hole golf courses. The courses were designed by Roland Faure and Dave Thomas to be challenging, educational and breathtakingly beautiful. Beauty, functionality and challenge bring golfers back year after year. Non golfing partners and spouses enjoy other aspects of Salobre, including horseback riding, the spa and some of the best Gran Canaria beaches.

Although Gran Canaria is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, some of the most popular attractions for tourists are water parks. Most of the parks on the island are open year round to accommodate tourists who enjoy their holidays any time of year.

Aquasur for example has 33 slides, 13 additional water attractions and a mini golf course. Ocean Park is accessible via bus services and offers several pools, 13 slides and a variety of great places to eat.

Palmitos Park is very popular among families who visit Gran Canaria. Many types of native plants are available for viewing, along with about 200 species of birds including peacocks, toucans, macaws and flamingos. Cocodrilo Park is home to a large variety of birds and butterflies and the largest collection of crocodiles in Europe.

Many families enjoy visiting museums and historical points on Gran Canaria. Museo Canario displays such local history as archaeological and ethnographical collections. At the Museo de Historia de Aguimes tourists will find artifacts that show and tell the happenings of the past five centuries. Other museums in Las Palmas include Museo Elder de la Ciencia y la Tecnologia and Casa Museo Perez Galdos.

For a small island Gran Canaria offers a lot of variety for her holidaymakers whatever the time of the year.
